Flashback Fridays: An Odd Place For It

Hey, all. Remember when I was going to do flasback Fridays every week until I ran out of old stories? Occasionally I do too. On that note, let's do the time warp again!

Title: An Odd Place For It
Fandoms: Harry Potter/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Characters: Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, Buffy Summers, Rupert Giles, Jenny Calendar, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, Cordelia Chase.
Length: 3,328 words
Rating: PG
Summary: Southern California is an odd place to find a horcrux but there are stranger things in the Sunnydale High School library.

I wrote this back in 2005, long before Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows came out. A lot of HP/Buffy crossovers have the Buffy gang older than Harry and co. for some reason, but the two stories take place at roughly the same time. Why don't more people play with that? If there was anyone who could tell Harry to maybe do some critical thinking about the nature of prophecy, it would be the girl who died (but not for long) thanks to the one about her.

Flashback Friday: The Gods Must Be Crazy

Title: The Gods Must Be Crazy
Fandom: Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: PG
Length: 5,360
Characters: Xander Harris, various OCs
Summary: The newly empowered Slayers are like a thousand Coke bottles in the desert. Xander goes looking for one among the Bushmen of Botswana.

Notes: This was another one of the stories I wrote for ludditerobot 's Scatterlings and Orphanages," a Xander in Africa writing challenge back in 2006, except I didn't get it finished in time to make the cut. I did a crap ton of research for it, but couldn't make the story gel until I decided to go with an interview transcript format.

Flashback Friday: Xander & Eshu's Wacky Road Trip Series

Back before the Buffy comics retconned it away, Xander supposedly went on a Slayer recruitment tour of Africa following season 7. In 2006, ludditerobot hosted "Scatterlings and Orphanages," a Xander in Africa writing challenge, and this series was born.

Title: At the Crossroads Well Met
Summary: The Yorùbá god Eshu meets an interesting man in a market in Benin or, for sixteen palm nuts, Xander accidentally hires a divine tour guide.

And its sequel:

Title: Goddess in the Water
Summary: Xander and Eshu find romance, a mystery and car trouble on the road, just not necessarily in that order.

I did a crap ton of research for this series. Both are set in Benin and feature a lot of local religious and mythical figures from that region. I actually had several more stories planned for it. The next one would have been "The Masks We Wear" in which an evil mask turns its wearers into vampires and Xander teams up with some followers of the warrior god Ogun to help put a stop to it. In retrospect, it would've had some pretty serious white savior bullshit going on, so it's probably for the best that grad school ate my life at that point. The third one would have involved actually finding a Slayer and would have tied in somehow to Benin's long tradition of female warriors. I wish I still had my notes for that one, but they got lost somewhere along the way. Oh, well.

Flashback Friday: No Power on This Earth

Title: No Power on this Earth
Fandoms: Buffy the Vampire Slayer/Supernatural
Characters: Xander Harris, Dean Winchester
Rating: PG
Length: 671
Summary: There are some things you do for money that you never talk about. The Fabulous Ladies Night Club is one of those.

I'm pretty sure I wrote this for some still_grrr prompt back in my LJ days, but, seeing as it was over 10 years ago, I can't quite remember and don't feel like checking.

Flashback Friday: Jennifer Hailey, Vampire Slayer Series

Title: Hailey Thinks
Fandoms: Stargate SG-1/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: PG
Length: 5,655
Characters: Jennifer Hailey, Xander Harris, Stargate minor characters and OCs
Summary: All Lt. Jennifer Hailey ever wanted was to travel the galaxy via a giant piece of alien technology, make some world changing scientific break throughs and show up Major Carter. Too bad destiny had other ideas. Now she's got superpowers and a whole lot to think about.

And its sequel

Title: The Lost Tribe
Fandoms: Stargate SG-1/Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Rating: PG
Length:
11,951
Characters: Jennifer Hailey, Jack O'Neill, Daniel Jackson, Samantha Carter, Teal'c,
Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris, Rupert Giles, Minor characters & OCs

Summary: Being a Slayer never meant much to Lt. Jennifer Hailey, but between a crisis off-world and a prophecy, it may mean a lot.

This series was originally posted on Twisting the Hellmouth back in 2007. Anyone else remember that site? I had some good times there. It basically started out as a one-shot, but I received consistent praise and interest from a few dedicated fans who inspired me to do more. Thanks, gang. Wouldn't have bothered to write it without you.

Portions of The Lost Tribe, specifically the scene with Willow in chapter 7, were written in direct response to a lot of tropes circulating in fandom at the time and was very much intended as a take-that. Two of the OC Slayers, specifically Sayaka and Lollise, were named after girls I went to college with who were from Japan and Botswana respectively. To the best of my knowledge, neither have super powers and neither acted much like their characters in the story. I just liked their names.
